Best of Show to David Petersen
Students from Heart of Iowa Activities Conference schools gathered in Gilbert March 3 not to compete, but to celebrate the arts at the HOIAC Fine Arts Festival.
For only the second time since joining the HOIAC, a Greene County artist received the Best of Show ribbon. Senior David Petersen’s acrylic painting of the Mahanay Bell Tower earned Best of Show. Petersen’s impressionistic rendering looks from the Home State Bank parking lot toward the bell tower.
Heather Vander Wilt, a 2010 Jefferson-Scranton graduate, won the award her senior year.
Greene County art teacher Sarah Stott reports that Greene County students earned 12 blue ribbons as follows: Karli Anthofer, ceramic sculpture; Trey Hinote, mixed media drawing; Faith Davis, mixed media portrait; David Petersen, oil painting portrait; Chris Nolle, colored pencil drawing and ink drawing; Jenna Ferguson, mixed media drawing and charcoal drawing; Mackenzie Dennhardt, watercolor painting; Morgan Hughes, photography; Kristal Morales, wheel thrown ceramics and colored pencil drawing.
Judge for the art show was Richard Heggen, retired professor of art in the Iowa State University College of Design.
A conference honor choir and an honor band rehearsed during the day and presented a concert that evening.
The choir, directed by Dr Lee Nelson of Wartburg College, included Greene County vocalists Maddie Schroeder, Nadia Fisher, Jack Schilling, Wyatt Funcke, Jarrett Delp, David Petersen, Michael Kennedy, Victoria Sims, Hannah Promes, Cassidy Adamson, Kenna Marquardt, Taliyah Carr and Danielle Johnson.
The band, directed by Brad Lampe of Clarke High School (Osceola), included Brittany Richardson and Aly Matthews on flute, Emily Heupel on oboe, Marissa Hinners and Theda Zills on clarinet, Noah Von Stein on bass clarinet, Noah Exline on alto saxophone, Serenity Blair on trumpet, Rielly Harrington and Claire Teusch on French horn, Kyle McAleer on trombone and Reid Stratton on percussion.
